Image distortion is a catch-all for any visual fault that isn't dim or dead: keystone (trapezoid image), pincushion (curved edges), ghosting (double image), banding (visible horizontal lines), rainbow effect (colour streaks on movement), and convergence drift (red, green and blue panels mis-aligned). Each has a different root cause and different fix.
Photograph the distorted image from the audience seat and a close-up of the projector menu showing keystone or convergence values. WhatsApp both to +91 7702503336 with the model code. Image-distortion fixes split between menu-only calibration (free if you proceed with another repair) and panel / DMD / convergence-motor repair (₹1,500-₹8,000) — the photo helps us scope the right one.
Common Symptoms We See
Walk through any of these patterns and you're in the right place.
Trapezoid keystone image
Image wider at the top than bottom, or wider on one side — placement issue, or auto-keystone sensor failed.
Ghosting or double image
Each character or shape has a faint twin offset slightly — LCD panel mis-aligned or DMD chip developing dead pixels.
Horizontal banding
Visible horizontal stripes across the image during video playback — LCD panel data line failure or HDMI source-rate mismatch.
Rainbow streaks on motion
Red-green-blue colour streaks visible on bright objects when you move your eyes — colour wheel slowing or DLP system fault.
Convergence mis-alignment
Red, green and blue panels offset — white text shows red on one edge and blue on the other. LCD or 3-panel projector alignment drift.
Geometric pin-cushion
Straight lines look curved — lens element mis-mounted or geometric correction settings lost. Often after a knock or move.
How We Fix It
Four steps from WhatsApp message to working projector.
WhatsApp a photo of the symptom
Send a phone photo of the projected image showing the distortion, plus the model code. Photo + model often tells us the fix before we arrive.
On-site diagnosis
Engineer arrives with calibration test patterns. We project geometric, colour-bar and convergence patterns to isolate which subsystem is at fault.
Calibrate or repair
If it's a settings or sensor issue, calibration takes 30-45 minutes on-site. If it's a panel or DMD chip, we collect for workshop repair.
Test on real content
After fix, we play a short video clip from your laptop, slide deck, or video source to confirm the issue is gone in real-world content, not just on test patterns.
Transparent Pricing
Quoted on WhatsApp before we visit. Final on the invoice.
Calibration & sensor reset
Auto-keystone reset, convergence re-calibration, geometric correction reset and source-rate alignment. For most distortion caused by settings or sensor drift.
Panel alignment & color wheel
LCD panel re-seating, color wheel speed check, polariser inspection and DMD chip cleaning. For ghosting, banding and mild rainbow effect.
Panel / DMD replacement
Full LCD panel set or DMD chip replacement for projectors with dead pixels, irreversible convergence drift or DMD bonding failure.
₹149 visit charge waived when you proceed with the repair. UPI / GPay / PhonePe / Paytm / cash accepted.
Why Projector Repair World
Two decades of projector specialisation, since 2007.
Test-pattern toolkit
We don't eyeball it. We project standard geometric, colour-bar and convergence patterns from a portable laptop to isolate the exact subsystem at fault.
Panel-level expertise
LCD panel re-seating and DMD chip work is delicate — our techs do it weekly, not yearly.
Genuine OEM panels
We source LCD panels and DMD chips from authorised distributors. No grey-market refurbs that drift back into convergence error in 3 months.
₹149 visit, no fix no fee
Distortion diagnosis is included in the ₹149 visit. If the fix is just a settings reset, that's all you pay.
Same-day calibration
Calibration jobs: 60-90 minutes on-site. Panel work: 2-5 working days at our Secunderabad workshop.
30-day return-visit warranty
If the distortion returns within 30 days, we come back at no charge. Many distortion issues need fine-tuning over multiple visits — we cover those.
Frequently Asked Questions
The questions we hear most often, answered without filler.
Auto-keystone sensor failure. Most projectors auto-correct keystone using an internal tilt sensor; when the sensor drifts or fails, the projector applies the wrong correction. Reset is usually ₹1,200-₹2,000 fitted. If the sensor itself has failed, we replace it for ₹2,500-₹4,500.
Rainbow effect is a DLP-only artifact — viewers see brief red-green-blue streaks on bright objects when they move their eyes. Caused by the colour wheel rotating too slowly. Mitigation: bump the colour-wheel speed in service menu (free during a normal repair visit), upgrade firmware, or replace the colour wheel with a higher-speed unit (₹2,500-₹4,500). LCD projectors don't have this issue.
Two common causes. (1) HDMI source-rate mismatch — your laptop is sending 50Hz to a projector that wants 60Hz, or vice versa. Check source resolution settings first. (2) LCD panel data-line fault — internal cable or panel itself developing dead lines. The first is free to fix (settings); the second needs panel work ₹2,500-₹4,500.
Sometimes. Light ghosting is often LCD panel mis-alignment after a knock or transport — we re-seat the panel and run convergence calibration (₹2,500-₹4,500). Heavy ghosting from dead pixels or bonding failure needs panel replacement (₹6,000-₹12,000).
Two possibilities: (1) lens element shifted from a knock — lens cleaning + alignment fixes it. (2) LCD/DMD panel mis-aligned with the optical block — panel re-seating fixes it. We diagnose during the ₹149 visit and tell you which it is.
Usually yes. Service-menu calibration realigns red, green and blue panels in software (₹1,200-₹2,000). For severe drift where calibration ranges are exhausted, mechanical panel re-seating helps. Beyond that, the projector is at end-of-life for image quality.
Source-resolution mismatch. Your laptop is outputting a resolution the projector doesn't natively support, and the projector's scaler is doing a poor job. Match the projector's native resolution in your laptop display settings (1024×768, 1280×800, 1920×1080 are common) — distortion vanishes.
Yes. Colour wheels are mechanical — 5,000-10,000 hours typical lifespan. Symptoms of a worn wheel: rattling noise, rainbow effect getting worse, colour banding on solid colours. Replacement: ₹2,500-₹4,500 fitted with 30-day warranty. A common service after 4-6 years of regular use.
A trapezoid-shaped image means the projector isn't perpendicular to the screen. The right fix is always physical: re-aim the projector or shift its mount. If it's ceiling-mounted, add or shorten the drop-rod so the lens sits dead-centre to the screen. Use the lens-shift wheel on your model if it has one. Avoid digital keystone correction as anything more than a last resort — it resamples the image, softens text and graphics, and visibly degrades 4K and PowerPoint detail. Vertical digital keystone typically handles 12-35°, horizontal is rare on home models. If the projector is auto-correcting wrongly even when level, the tilt sensor has drifted — sensor reset or replacement runs ₹1,200-₹4,500 fitted.
