Flickering looks the same to your eye but reads very differently to a tech. A lamp at end-of-life flickers slowly, fading and recovering over half a second, because the gas inside is no longer ionising consistently. A signal-integrity flicker is much faster, single-frame drops or sub-frame stripes, caused by a bad cable or source. A DLP color-wheel timing slip shows as rainbow stripes and brief brightness pulses synced to the wheel rotation. The right fix needs the right diagnosis.

Slow fade and recover
Image dims over half a second then brightens again, repeating every few seconds. Lamp at end-of-life, gas no longer ionising consistently, ballast struggling to hold steady current.
Fast strobe / shimmer
Rapid flicker visible as a shimmer especially on flat colours. Signal-integrity issue, HDMI cable failing under length, source device output unstable, or wireless casting dropping frames.
Rainbow streak with flicker
Brief rainbow stripes paired with brightness pulses. DLP-only symptom, color wheel timing has slipped or the wheel motor is losing sync with the formatter chip.
Flicker only on certain inputs
Flicker on HDMI 1 but not HDMI 2, or worse on the laptop than the set-top box. Source-side or cable-side fault, projector itself is fine.
Flicker after warm-up
Image stable for first 5-10 minutes then starts flickering as the projector warms up. Capacitor on the ballast or power board going out of spec at temperature.
Flicker plus shutdown
Flicker progresses to auto-shutdown within 10-30 minutes. Combined lamp end-of-life and thermal protection, lamp drawing more current than ballast can supply safely.

Source isolation first
Tech arrives with known-good HDMI cables, a test laptop, USB-stick content. About 25% of flicker calls clear up at this step alone, especially with newer 4K HDMI handshakes that don't tolerate marginal cables.
Lamp, ballast, color-wheel checks
If the source side is clean, we read lamp hours from the menu, measure ballast output under load, and on DLP units check color-wheel timing through the service interface. Diagnosis takes 20-40 minutes.

Lamp replacement

Ballast / power-board repair
Ballast capacitor replacement or power-board repair when the lamp is healthy but the supply current is unstable. For flicker that develops after warm-up or under bright content.
Color-wheel timing repair
DLP-only. Color-wheel motor service, sync-sensor cleaning, or wheel replacement when timing slip causes rainbow flicker. We diagnose by service-menu readout before quoting.

Lamp-hour counters track time, not actual gas health. A lamp with rough power cycles or thermal stress can reach end-of-life behaviour at 60-70% of rated hours. The reliable test is ballast output under load, which we measure on visit.

Yes, very common. HDMI 2.0 cables marginal at 4K can pass picture but drop frames every few seconds, which reads as fast strobe flicker. Swapping to a certified cable is free advice and resolves about 1 in 4 flicker calls in our experience.
Yes, that's the classic color-wheel timing slip. The wheel rotates at high RPM and a sync sensor tells the formatter when each colour segment is in front of the lamp. When timing drifts, you get a brief rainbow stripe paired with a brightness pulse. Repair runs ₹2,500-₹6,500 fitted.
If the flicker is slow fade with the lamp, yes, continued use stresses the ballast and can pop the lamp. Switch to a different unit or shorten use until we can diagnose. Fast strobe from a bad cable is harmless to the projector but eye-fatiguing for the viewer.

Ghosting (a faint duplicate image alongside the main picture) is usually a signal-path or cable problem, not a projector fault. First, separate your video cable from power cables and AC adaptors — electromagnetic interference is the most common cause. Don't bundle a long VGA or HDMI in a coil; lay it flat. Switch to a shielded or ferrite-cored cable. If you're running a long cable run with multiple connectors, add a powered HDMI/VGA booster instead of daisy-chaining cheap adapters. Match the source resolution to the projector's native resolution in your laptop's display settings.
