What are the hidden costs of projector repair in India?
Short answer: The four costs that inflate projector repair bills beyond the quoted repair price are: the diagnosis or visit fee (₹149–₹500); courier or transport charges (₹300–₹1,200); GST at 18% on parts and labour; and parts procurement surcharges when components need to be imported or specially sourced. Knowing these in advance prevents the sticker shock of a final invoice that is significantly higher than the original quote.
Hidden cost 1: Diagnosis fee
Every responsible repair begins with a diagnosis visit before any parts are ordered. This visit — doorstep or at a service centre — has a fee. At PRW, the visit fee is ₹149 and is waived when you proceed with the repair. Some other shops in India charge ₹200–₹500 as a non-refundable diagnosis fee whether or not you proceed. Always ask whether the diagnosis fee is waived on proceeding with repair, and get the answer in writing before the visit. A visit that confirms an inexpensive fix is worth ₹149 regardless; a visit that confirms an expensive fix also saves you from authorising blind work.
Hidden cost 2: Courier or transport charges
If your projector is ceiling-mounted or installed in a fixed position, bringing it to a service centre requires dismounting, packing, and transporting it — work that has a cost. Return courier for a projector (typically 3–8 kg) within the same city ranges from ₹300–₹600 one-way. Inter-city courier for a projector sent for a repair that cannot be done on-site (e.g. DLP chip replacement) ranges from ₹600–₹1,200 each way, adding ₹1,200–₹2,400 to the total bill. Doorstep service — available across Hyderabad from PRW — eliminates this cost entirely. For complex repairs that require bench time, we collect and return the unit as part of the on-site service process.
Hidden cost 3: GST at 18%
GST (Goods and Services Tax) applies at 18% on both parts and labour for repair and maintenance services in India. A quoted repair of ₹5,000 exclusive of GST becomes ₹5,900 on the final invoice. For a lamp replacement at ₹6,000 parts + ₹800 labour, the GST adds ₹1,224. Always ask whether the quoted price is GST-inclusive before approving work. Hidden cost 4: Parts procurement surcharge
For projector models where the required part is not stocked locally — particularly older or premium models where the lamp module, LCD panel, or DLP chip requires grey-market sourcing or import — shops may add a procurement surcharge of ₹200–₹800 to cover sourcing effort and payment advance. This is legitimate when disclosed upfront. The issue arises when it appears on the invoice without prior mention. Ask explicitly whether the required part is locally stocked or needs to be sourced, the sourcing timeline, and whether a procurement surcharge applies. - Is there a separate diagnosis or visit fee if I decline the repair?
- Are there courier or transport charges, and who covers return transport?
- Is the required part locally stocked, or does it need to be sourced? Is there a procurement surcharge?
- What is the warranty on the repair, and what does it cover?
Any shop that cannot answer all five upfront is not giving you a real quote — they are giving you a floor price with undisclosed upside.
