How much does projector lens repair cost in India?
Short answer: Lens repair cost depends entirely on which lens component has failed. Stripped lens shift gears cost ₹1,500–₹3,500 to replace. A failed focus servo motor costs ₹2,000–₹5,000. A full optical block replacement — for physically cracked or internally fungus-etched elements — costs ₹8,000–₹25,000. Our ₹149 doorstep diagnosis identifies which component is at fault before any part is sourced.
Three lens faults — three very different repair bills
1. Stripped lens shift gears
Most short-throw and installation projectors (Epson EB-L series, NEC PA series, Sony VPL-FH series) have motorised lens shift — the ability to move the projected image up, down, left, or right without physically tilting the projector. The shift mechanism uses a small plastic gear rack. After 3–5 years of regular adjustment, the gear teeth can strip. The result is a motor that runs but the lens does not move — or it moves only in one direction. Gear replacement is a mechanical job: ₹1,500–₹3,500 depending on model availability. No optical work is involved.
2. Focus servo motor failure
On projectors with motorised focus (controlled via the remote or OSD menu), the focus servo motor is a small DC stepper motor inside the lens barrel. When it fails, the lens is stuck at the last focus position — it accepts focus commands but produces no movement. This is distinct from a lens that has drifted out of focus from vibration; in that case, the manual focus ring still works. Servo motor replacement costs ₹2,000–₹5,000 and requires careful disassembly of the lens barrel. The optical elements are not disturbed during this repair.
3. Full optical block replacement
The optical block is the complete lens assembly — all glass elements, barrel, shift mechanism, and focus mechanism as a unit. Replacement is required when: the front or rear element is physically cracked from impact, internal fungal growth has etched the anti-reflection coating on internal elements (common in humid storage environments), or the lens was dropped and the barrel alignment is no longer concentric. Optical block pricing in India ranges from ₹8,000 for budget Acer or Optoma office models to ₹25,000 for NEC or Sony installation projector lenses. Availability for models older than 8 years is sometimes limited to refurbished pulls.
The India angle: fungus and humidity are the primary optical killers
In India, projectors stored in school store rooms, basements, or non-air-conditioned spaces during summer break frequently develop internal lens fungus. Fungal spores enter the lens barrel through the focus and zoom grooves and colonise the anti-reflection coating on internal glass elements. Early-stage fungus appears as haze that reduces contrast; advanced etching creates permanent circular growth rings that cannot be cleaned. The key preventive step is silica-gel storage and quarterly power-on cycles to heat the interior and drive out moisture. A note from the PRW Engineer Team
The most common misdiagnosis we encounter is attributing a blurry image to a “lens fault” when the projector is simply at the wrong throw distance. Always consult the projector’s throw ratio table before booking a lens repair. A ₹149 visit that confirms the correct throw distance is a far cheaper outcome than a ₹4,000 focus servo replacement that doesn’t resolve a geometry problem.
